Sinn’s collection of dive watches is diverse, original and technology lead. Most popular in the Sinn divers watch collection are the Sinn U1 (1000m), the Sinn U2 (2000m & dual time) and, our favourite, the Sinn UX range with HYDRO technology. ChronoDivers takes a deep dive into the Sinn Dive Watch collection including a review of their key functions & features. We also consider the best online places to buy a pre-owned Sinn watch.

Founded in 1961 Sinn is a company lead by innovation and design. Sinn produce watches that are instantly recognizable – similar to those of Bell & Ross – they have their own unique styling.

An Introduction to Sinn Divers Watches

We have to go back to 1961 when Helmut Sinn founds the company “Helmut Sinn Spezialuhren” in Frankfurt. The company’s focus at that time was the manufacture of navigation clocks and pilot chronographs. There are few companies in the horological arena with such an impressive history of innovation, exploration and certification. Lothar Schmidt, an engineer himself, bought Sinn in 1994 bringing with him a burning desire for technological development. Innovative features such as Sinn Hydro – filling the watch dial and hands void with an oil to prevent reflection when under the water …..

Case Made from German Submariner Steel

One of the standout USP’s of the Sinn range of dive watches is their choice of material for the casing. Sinn use a unique high-strength, seawater-resistant German Submarine Steel for all their cases and crowns. Many models have the optional extra of Sinn TEGIMENT (a patented stainless steel case hardened technology providing extremely effective protection from scratches)

One thing that really sets our teeth on edge at ChronoDivers is when an alleged “dive watch” has hands colour coordinated to the watch’s dial. White hands on a white face might look quirky in the office, but try and read them under water! The Sinn range of divers’ watches all have highly contrasting dials and hands. Most models feature a matt black dial and contrasting white hands and indexes – precisely what you need in low visibility – 30 metres under the sea.

A look at one of their best sellers – the Sinn U1

With a fusion of engineering prowess and design finesse, this timepiece stands as an embodiment of superior craftsmanship, poised to redefine the standards of rugged elegance and functional excellence.

Craftsmanship Forged in Submarine Steel: Design and Construction

The Sinn U1 is a marvel of modern engineering, sculpted from the esteemed German submarine steel that lends it an exceptional level of durability. Standing as a symbol of technical prowess, the U1 encapsulates strength and substance through its pronounced 44mm case, embracing a harmonious blend of brushed and polished surfaces. The iconic crown guards, reminiscent of maritime instruments, add both an aesthetic touch and fortify the watch’s rugged appeal.

Exploration Awaits: Functionality and Performance

Unveiling the U1’s prowess requires a closer examination of its exceptional features. The unidirectional rotating bezel, calibrated with meticulous precision, empowers divers with an accurate tool for measuring immersion times, epitomizing reliability in the most demanding underwater scenarios. The dial, a testament to legibility, employs bold indices and hands infused with Super-LumiNova, ensuring impeccable readability in the darkest abyss or the grandest ballroom.

Notice the position of the U1’s crown at the 4 o’clock position – this prevents pressure on the back of the hand when bending the wrist. The first two watches are coated in black hard coating PVD – in conjunction with TEGIMENT anti-scratch treatment.

The Pulsating Heart of Precision: Movement Unveiled

At its core lies the esteemed Sellita SW200-1 automatic movement, a testament to horological precision. Its mechanical mastery ensures unwavering accuracy and consistent performance, aligning with the aspirations of professionals and enthusiasts alike. This movement, bearing a power reserve of 38 hours, echoes the steadfast nature of the U1, reassuring its wearer of a reliable companion on every odyssey.

Versatility Redefined: Straps and Beyond

Adapting to diverse lifestyles and tastes, the Sinn U1 offers a spectrum of strap options. From the robust stainless steel bracelet, a harmonious extension of the case, to the sporty rubber strap, embracing aquatic prowess, and the rugged leather alternatives that evoke nostalgia, the U1 seamlessly transitions between various scenarios, a chameleon of style and utility.

Epitome of Refined Excellence: Final Thoughts

In summation, the Sinn U1 Dive Watch is a symphony of form and function, an instrument of precision designed to withstand the rigors of exploration and to grace the wrist of the discerning individual. It harmonizes the realms of maritime heritage, modern technology, and aesthetic elegance, exemplifying the convergence of purpose and design. As time journeys onward, the Sinn U1 stands as a beacon of excellence, inviting wearers to embark on their own ventures, both beneath the waves and within the confines of a stylish metropolitan landscape.

Sinn UX S Combat Swimmer (EZM 2B)

An accolade that many dive watch manufacturers strive for is the adoption of their timepieces by the National Armed Forces. Germany’s Commando Frogman Force KSM (Kommando Spezialkräfte der Marine) are one such division endorsing Sinn divers watches. The Sinn Mission Timer UX S Combat Swimmer (EZM 2B) is worn by all KSM divers. An  international tender was placed by the Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment (BAAINBw) with strict guidelines to how the watch must perform. The Sinn UX was selected over the competitors watches – proof enough that this is a very competetent, professional underwater timepiece.

Development of HYDRO Technology

Visibility of a dive watch at depth is second only to water resistance. Sinn developed their own HYDRO Technology – introduced in the Sinn 403 HYDRO for the first time. This innovative design feature provides freedom from fogging and optimal readability at any angle.

Compliance to European Diving Equipment Standards

SINN manufacture diving watches in compliance with European diving equipment standards – they were the first company to do so. They were also the first to put their dive watches through third party testing to certify them for pressure resistance, water resistance and resistance to fogging.

The Sinn 140 S in outer space

We all know that Omega Speedmaster watches have been worn in space, but they’re not the only brand with that claim. In 1985 the German physicist / astronaut Professor Dr. Reinhard Furrer wore a Sinn 140 S during the D-1 spacelab mission. In doing so he proves the watch’s self-winding mechanism works even in the weightless conditions of space.
